Better Access to Water in Nicaragua
Our Goal
This project contributes to the empowerment and food security of the population in the municipality of Tipitapa, Nicaragua, through access to clean water for human consumption, improved sanitation, and water for backyard gardens.
Project Profile
The project aims to strengthen the capacities of local entrepreneurs to install, operate, and maintain “Simple, Market-based, Affordable and Repairable Water and Sanitation Technologies” (SMARTechs) such as dry toilets, rainwater storage tanks, or household water filters. During the first year of work, a series of demonstration objects were installed and training sessions for artisans and entrepreneurs were conducted.
Main Achievements
An agreement with a local micro-credit institution was signed to offer users a specific credit line for water and sanitation products in services. Through public information campaigns, people without connections to water networks were informed about the products and services available.
- Establishment of a municipal coalition to promote SMARTechs in Tipitapa, with participation of the municipality, national authorities and actors from the private sector as well as civil society.
- Development of a micro-credit product as a commercial offer to facilitate access to improved water and sanitation services. This commercial offer was extended beyond project duration and continues generating positive impact for families in the region.
- Enhancement of the product offerings of local entrepreneurs and their technical up-skilling.
- Sharing experience with other organizations, and further promotion of the existing products and services.
